The clever deal here is that a digital TV (DVB-T) receiver has been built into the phone, which means you can watch all 40+ Freeview channels on the t600′s apparently excellent 2.6-inch touchscreen 640×480 display. There’s an extendable aerial on top to boost reception, though you’ll still need to be in an area with a potent Freeview signal.

Create a Shortcut to the Safely Remove Hardware Dialog

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and choose New \ Shortcut:

Then paste in the following into the location box:

RunDll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll

Give it a name, and you’ll have a shortcut icon…

…that will pull up the Safely Remove Hardware dialog.

Assign a Shortcut Key

If you want to assign a shortcut key to this dialog, you can right-click the icon and open the properties dialog, then go to the Shortcut tab.

Add in the shortcut key and close the dialog. As long as the shortcut is on your desktop you shouldn’t have to restart anything for the hotkey to work. You can also move the shortcut to another folder, for instance your quick launch bar.

Tip: If you add the shortcut to the Windows Vista quick launch bar, you can use the built-in hotkeys instead of bothering to assign one manually.

I suppose this could also be used in reverse, if your start menu does not have the username you could check this registry setting. I’m quite sure that somebody somewhere will find a use for this topic.

Note that this only applies to the XP style menu, not the classic menus… since they don’t have the username anyway.

Manual Registry Hack

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu run box, and then browse down to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Create a new DWORD value on the right-hand pane with the following values:

• Name: NoUserNameInStartMenu
• Value: 1

To remove, either set the value to 0 or just delete the key. You will have to log off and back on to see the start menu without the username:

You could also remove the picture by deleting or renaming this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\User Account Pictures\Default Pictures

Doing so would remove the picture from the login page as well, and it doesn’t remove the blue border across the top.

In a mail-out to previous testers, Microsoft said it would make the pre-release code available to the “general public” but pointed out that it is “focused on the developer community”. Microsoft had already stated in the past that the main advances in IE8 will focus on compliance with web standards, security and user interface options, something the web developer community feels that IE7 failed to live up to.

The company has long been the target of criticism for not following standards in its browser but, as numerous critics have noted, any effort to make IE standards compliant runs the risk of breaking existing sites written for earlier versions. Microsoft will attempt to compromise by offering developers the option to stay in or out of the web standards mode.

IE 8 is scheduled to be demonstrated for the first time in public at the MIX ’08 conference in Las Vegas that starts on the 5 March.

Dunnington, Intel’s 45nm six-core Xeon processor from the Penryn family, will succeed the Xeon Tigerton processor. Whereas Tigerton is essentially two 65nm Core 2 Duo processors fused on one package, Dunnington will be Intel’s first Core 2 Duo processor with three dual-core banks. Dunnington includes 16MB of L3 cache shared by all six processors. Each pair of cores can also access 3MB of local L2 cache. The end result is a design very similar to the AMD Barcelona quad-core processor; however, each Barcelona core contains 512KB L2 cache, whereas Dunnington cores share L2 cache in pairs.

To sweeten the deal, all Dunnington processors will be pin-compatible with Intel Tigerton processors, and work with the existing Clarksboro chipset. Intel’s slide claims this processor will launch in the second half of 2008 — a figure consistent with previous roadmaps from the company.
